Anne Carney
Maine Senate District 29:
Cape Elizabeth,
South Portland &
Scarborough (part)
In my service as Senate Chair of the Judiciary Committee and a member of the Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, some of my priorities this session include ensuring access to justice for all Mainers, helping reduce costs for utility ratepayers, and protecting the constitutional rights of everyone in our state. With strong bipartisan support, my colleagues and I have continued the growth of the Commission on Public Defense Services to ensure Mainers across our state can receive their constitutionally required legal representation. I also remain committed to keeping our immigrant communities safe, protecting the rights of women and LGBTQ+ Mainers, and working to advance recognition of the inherent sovereignty of the Wabanaki Nations. In addition, I am working on passage of bills to improve access to health care and alleviate burdensome property taxes.

This legislative session, I served on the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee, which negotiates and writes Maine's budget. I am working hard to include things that are important to the people of South Portland: measures that lower the costs of everyday things like housing and childcare, funding for our schools, and money to provide food to hungry Mainers in case of future SNAP cuts by Donald Trump. Additionally, I am working with my colleagues to protect immigrants in Maine, especially as we wait for my bill from last session, LD 1971, to take effect this summer.

This legislative session, I am focusing on modernizing energy infrastructure by streamlining the permitting process to accelerate the transition to clean energy. Another primary goal is expanding equity in home performance by ensuring more homeowners can successfully navigate and access essential energy efficiency programs. Finally, my agenda prioritizes economic justice through the pursuit of greater tax fairness, aiming to reduce the financial burden on those who can least afford it.

Maine House District 122:
South Portland
This term I've been working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to advocate for laws and tax policies that would save money for working families. As a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Labor, I've advocated for legislation to protect workers and ensure they are paid properly by their employers. In terms of protecting our environment, I've been advocating for greater transparency about the potential hazards surrounding South Portland's large petroleum storage facilities.

As a member of the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee, I have become deeply engaged in understanding the complex factors driving the rising cost of healthcare for Maine families and small businesses. This session, my focus is on identifying practical, state-level solutions that improve both access to care and affordability. I am committed to advancing policies that lower costs, strengthen our healthcare workforce, and ensure every Mainer can get the care they need when they need it.
